A recent survey of 2,000 U.S. adults found that Americans have reduced their discretionary spending by 42% over the past year. Over half (52%) expressed worry about their finances, leading two-thirds (66%) to regularly turn to thrifting to balance budgets. Nearly one in six (17%) thrift weekly, with Gen Z shopping secondhand more than other generations (28%). While 72% thrift to save money, many enjoy the thrill of finding deals (51%) and unique items (42%). Clothing (71%) is the top thrifted item, followed by home decor, books, and collectibles. On average, respondents estimated that 34% of their belongings are secondhand. (Talker Research)
