A comprehensive study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association has revealed a concerning decline in the health of American children over the past 17 years. The research paints a bleak picture, with children today more likely to struggle with obesity, chronic diseases, and mental health issues like depression. The study examined 170 indicators across eight data sources, all of which point to a generalized deterioration in children’s physical and mental well-being. Obesity rates for 2-19-year-olds rose from 17% in 2007-2008 to around 21% in 2021-2023, while the prevalence of chronic conditions like anxiety and sleep apnea increased by 15-20% compared to 2011. The research points to broader societal issues, with the authors likening children to “canaries in the coal mine” – as their deteriorating health reflects larger problems within American society.
