Shailene Woodley To Produce And Star In Upcoming Janis Joplin Biopic

Shailene Woodley is set to portray Janis Joplin in a new biopic, which she will also produce. The film, benefiting from a $2.5 million tax credit from California, has a $10 million budget. “California meant so much to Janis Joplin — from the stoops of San Francisco to the wooden walls of Sunset Sound, the state became the stage upon which she explored not just the world of music, but the world of her vibrant humanity,” Woodley said in a statement. Despite previous attempts, a biopic about Joplin has never materialized, with several potential projects scrapped over the years. The only significant Joplin-inspired film to date is 1979’s The Rose, starring Bette Midler. (COS)
