Medical professionals should recommend kiwi fruit instead of high-fiber diets as first-line treatment for constipation, according to new guidance from King’s College London researchers. The recommendations suggest patients eat two or three kiwis daily or 8-10 prunes to improve symptoms. The guidance, based on 75 clinical trials, also recommends mineral water over tap water and magnesium oxide supplements for relief. Constipation affects one in 10 people when it doesn’t resolve naturally. Professor Kevin Whelan said the new guidance “marks a promising step towards empowering health professionals and their patients to manage constipation through diet.” (Story URL)
